The Art of Buy Low, Sell High: A Moving Average Guide

What Is "Sell High, Buy Low"?

"Sell high, buy low" is one of the most fundamental and most important trading concepts — buying when the stock price is at a relatively low level and selling when it is at a relatively high level, repeatedly executing this approach to reduce the cost basis of a position or lock in profits.

It sounds simple, but actually doing it well requires a set of objective judgment tools, not gut feeling.

The moving average system is precisely the most practical technical analysis framework within this set of tools, and is one that is commonly used by both institutional investors and retail investors alike.

What Is a Moving Average? Why Is It Useful?

A moving average (MA) is calculated by taking the average of the closing prices over the past N days and connecting these values into a line.

Its core function is to filter out short-term noise and reveal the medium-to-long-term trend direction of a stock price.

Commonly used moving averages and what they represent:

The 5-day moving average (MA5) — represents the average cost over one week; it is the reference line most closely watched by ultra-short-term traders, is the most sensitive, and is suitable for capturing short-term movements.

The 10-day moving average (MA10) — represents the average cost over two weeks; it is the core reference line for short-term trading and is often referred to as the "lifeline of short-term trading."

The 20-day moving average (MA20) — represents the average cost over one month; it is the most commonly used reference line for medium-term trading, and many institutional traders regard it as the dividing line between bullish and bearish.

The 50-day moving average (MA50) — represents the average cost over approximately two and a half months, and is an important support and resistance level for medium-to-long-term trends.

The 200-day moving average (MA200) — represents the average cost over approximately ten months; it is the long-term trend line most highly regarded by institutions, and a break below the 200-day moving average often triggers large-scale institutional stop-losses.

Sell When Price Breaks Below a Moving Average, Buy When Price Breaks Above — Practical Application

The core logic of moving average trading is as follows: when a stock price trades above the moving average, it indicates that short-term costs are higher than long-term costs and the market is in a strong state; when the stock price breaks below the moving average, it indicates that recent buyers are generally at a loss and the market is weakening.

Short-term trading reference (suitable for active traders):

A buy signal on crossing above the 5-day moving average — when the stock price breaks through the 5-day moving average from below, accompanied by an increase in trading volume, this is the most preliminary short-term buy signal.

It is suitable for traders who seek quick in-and-out trades, but the risk of a false breakout should be noted; it is advisable to wait for closing price confirmation rather than chasing the move intraday.

A position reduction signal on breaking below the 5-day moving average — if a held stock's closing price breaks below the 5-day moving average, the position may be reduced by 30 to 50%, retaining a partial position to wait for a rebound.

If the closing price remains below the 5-day moving average for two consecutive days, consider fully exiting the position.

Medium-term trading reference (suitable for investors holding positions for one to three months):

A buy signal on crossing above the 20-day moving average — when the stock price breaks above the 20-day moving average, particularly when the 20-day moving average itself is also sloping upward, this is a strong signal for medium-term buying.

This type of breakout often represents the beginning of an intermediate-term rally.

A position reduction signal on breaking below the 20-day moving average — if a held stock breaks below the 20-day moving average, the position should be reduced by 50 to 70%. If it simultaneously breaks below the 50-day moving average, consider fully stopping out.

Long-term trading reference (suitable for investors holding positions for more than three months):

The stock price holding firmly above the 200-day moving average — this indicates that the long-term trend is positive and is the basic condition for long-term holding. When the stock price pulls back to the vicinity of the 200-day moving average, it is often the optimal entry opportunity for long-term investors.

The stock price breaking below the 200-day moving average — this is the most serious long-term sell signal; historically, stocks that break below the 200-day moving average tend to enter a deeper correction cycle.

Golden Cross and Death Cross — Stronger Confirmation Signals

A single moving average breakout carries the risk of a false breakout, whereas the golden cross and death cross provide more reliable directional confirmation.

Golden cross (buy signal) — the short-term moving average crosses above the long-term moving average from below; for example, the 5-day moving average crossing above the 20-day moving average, or the 20-day moving average crossing above the 50-day moving average.

A golden cross indicates that short-term momentum has surpassed the long-term equilibrium and is an important signal of a strengthening trend.

Death cross (sell signal) — the short-term moving average crosses below the long-term moving average from above; for example, the 5-day moving average crossing below the 20-day moving average.

A death cross indicates that short-term momentum is weaker than the long-term equilibrium and is an important signal of a weakening trend.

The strongest buy signal is when the 5-day, 20-day, and 50-day moving averages are simultaneously aligned upward (bullish alignment); the strongest sell signal is when all three moving averages are simultaneously aligned downward (bearish alignment).

Practical Example: Using NVIDIA (NVDA) as an Illustration

In early 2025, after experiencing a pullback of approximately 20%, NVIDIA's stock price crossed back above the 20-day moving average and held firmly above the 50-day moving average, with the 50-day moving average slope pointing upward — this was a classic medium-term buy signal, after which NVIDIA launched a strong rally that lasted for several months.

Conversely, in a certain quarter of the same year, NVIDIA's stock price broke below the 20-day moving average following its earnings report, accompanied by expanding trading volume — this was a signal to reduce short-term positions.

If holders had reduced their position by 50% at that point, they could have effectively reduced losses from the subsequent correction, and then rebuilt their position at a lower average price after the stock price stabilized following the pullback.

The Limitations of the Moving Average System

Every technical tool has its limitations, and the moving average system is no exception.

In strongly trending markets, the moving average system performs excellently; but in sideways, range-bound markets, false breakouts occur frequently and the reliability of moving average signals declines significantly.

Therefore, when using the moving average system, the following principles should be combined:

Volume confirmation — a breakout of a moving average must be accompanied by an increase in trading volume; a breakout without volume is often a false breakout.

Broader market environment — when the overall market is in a downtrend, the reliability of signals from individual stocks crossing above moving averages is reduced, and greater caution is required.

Fundamental alignment — moving average technical analysis should be used in conjunction with fundamental analysis, and should not be relied upon in isolation.
