Investment Memo
1. Why Revisit GRAB Now?
What has most easily misled investors on GRAB over the past year is the clear divergence between the stock's price action and the company's operating performance.
The stock fell from its 52-week high of $6.60 to a low of $2.74 and currently sits at only around $3.17. Yet over the same period, the company's revenue did not collapse. Instead, it began entering the phase the market has been waiting for over the past few years: growth continues, but profits are starting to grow faster than revenue.
In Q2 2026, Grab's revenue rose 22% year-over-year to $997 million, and On-Demand GMV grew 21% to $6.46 billion. Adjusted EBITDA increased 54% year-over-year to $168 million, and monthly transacting users reached approximately 53.9 million. The company also raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $4.10–4.15 billion and its Adjusted EBITDA guidance to $720–740 million.
This means that analyzing GRAB today can no longer rely on the framework of a few years ago, when it was seen as "a cash-burning Southeast Asian version of Uber."
2. The Three Changes the Team Considers Most Noteworthy
First, operating leverage has emerged in the core businesses.
In Q2, Delivery revenue grew 21%, while Segment Adjusted EBITDA grew 53%. Mobility revenue grew only 12%, yet Segment Adjusted EBITDA still reached $191 million. In other words, Grab has begun shifting from "burning cash for GMV" to "GMV growth that converts into profit."
Second, the financial services business is turning from a drag into a potential second profit curve.
In Q2, Financial Services revenue rose 59% year-over-year to $134 million, and the loan portfolio grew 197% year-over-year to $2.32 billion, while the segment's Adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed from $26 million in the same period last year to $15 million.
Third, and the most important new information in the market recently:
Grab CEO Anthony Tan personally bought nearly $30 million of company stock on the open market, and COO Alex Hungate also added to his holdings at the same time.
This is not the company granting stock awards to management; it is a genuine open-market purchase with real money.
At the same time, Grab announced plans to execute approximately $900 million in remaining share repurchase authorization over the next 12 months. Based on the current market capitalization of about $12.9 billion, this amounts to nearly 7% of the current market cap.
3. So Why Is the Stock Still So Weak?
The reason is not complicated.
The market is not doubting whether Grab can make money; it is doubting whether management will once again spend all the money it earns on acquisitions.
On September 15, Grab announced the purchase of a 60% stake in Atome Financial for $1.49 billion in cash, with plans to acquire the remaining 40% in about two years. This pushes Grab further from an asset-light super app toward consumer finance and lending.
The company believes the deal will significantly scale its financial services. By 2028, the entire Financial Services segment targets $500 million in Adjusted EBITDA and a loan portfolio of over $6 billion. At the same time, the group raised its 2028 Adjusted EBITDA target from $1.5 billion to $1.7 billion, and its 2025–2028 revenue CAGR target from about 20% to over 30%.
But the market sees the other side: $1.49 billion in cash, the follow-on obligation to acquire the remaining 40%, a rapidly expanding loan portfolio, plus a string of acquisitions over the past year.
Reuters Breakingviews also noted that although Grab's operations have improved, its stock has still fallen more than 40% in 2026, as the market clearly discounts its capital allocation and pace of acquisitions.
So GRAB's biggest contradiction right now is very clear:
Business profits are moving up, but the capital allocation discount the market applies is pulling the valuation down.
Once management proves that "acquisitions have not destroyed cash flow," this type of stock could see its valuation recover quickly. Conversely, if bad debts and funding needs in the financial business spiral out of control, a price that looks cheap now could get even cheaper.
